A New York IT admin, angry at being laid off, now faces 5 years in prison for sending his former employer email threats and attempting to extort money from them.

Viktor Savtyrev, 29, pleaded guilty to extortion after he threatening emails and attempting to extort money from his former comapny. Here’s an excerpt from the story:

Savtyrev threatened his former employers with computer crashes. He also threatened to enlist Eastern European hackers to launch attacks against his former employer, New York investment firm Third Avenue Management.

“My comrades for a small fee are able to help me out with bridging the firewall security and carry out data destruction and virus outbreak,” Savtyrev wrote in an e-mail to the company, according to the complaint. “I located the names and e-mail addresses of the editors of Wall Street Journal, Newsweek and the Daily News and all of them should be very interested in getting an article about a mutual fund (losing) data because some “Crazy Russian’ (this is the name of the article which I wrote last night), was fired after 5 years of loyal service.”

Unfortunately for Savtyrev, using email was a big mistake. The company promptly turned them over to the FBI and he was quickly tracked down. With layoffs at an all time high, it’s possible that other such incidents may happen. While you can’t blame someone for being angry over a layoff, such behavior is very unacceptable. If your company is planning any layoffs, make sure any login info and accounts that a laid off employee may have are changed or deleted immediately, just to be safe.

A DirecTV customer in Memphis, TN says a customer service representative sent her a threatening email after she called to pay her bill. Here’s an excerpt from the story:

A DirecTV satellite dish still sits on top of Sangueta Hawkins’ home, but for how much longer? She doesn’t know. On Monday, Hawkins says she called DirecTV customer service to help her pay her bill online. After being on the phone with the third representative, for 30 minutes, she paid and hung up.

Just minutes later she says she got an email from that same customer service representative, saying she and her family would die.

She says her email address on her DirecTV profile was also changed to Sangueta.FOOL.Hawkins. Memphian Quinton Ford was amazed at the allegations, “What would possess them to come towards their own customers like that”?

Sounds unbelievable that someone would treat a customer that way, doesn’t it? There were no details given for why it took 3 reps and at least half an hour just to pay her bill, but such behavior is still inexcusable. DirecTV said they’ve found the employee responsible but didn’t say if he/she had been terminated or even disciplined. Hawkins meanwhile has retained a lawyer.

This is a strong reminder that no matter how angry a customer may make you, always think before hitting send. In fact if you are angry, it’s best to step away from the computer and take some time to cool off before firing off an email. Professionalism demands putting the company’s interest before your feelings. Your job, and your company’s reputation may depend on it.

There’s a very interesting report on CNet about how the FBI used spyware to nab a variety of cybercriminals who committed crimes via email. Here’s an excerpt:

One suspect used Microsoft’s Hotmail to send bomb and anthrax threats to an undercover government investigator; another demanded a payment of $10,000 a month to stop cutting cables; a third was an alleged European hitman who was soliciting for business from a Hushmail.com account.

The FBI spyware, called CIPAV, came to light in July 2007 through court documents that showed how the bureau used it to nab a teenager who was emailing bomb threats to a high school near Olympia, Wash. (CIPAV stands for Computer and Internet Protocol Address Verifier.)

An affadavit written by FBI Special Agent Norman Sanders at the time said that CIPAV is able to send “network-level messages” containing the target computer’s IP address, Ethernet MAC address, environment variables, the last-visited Web site, and other registry-type information including the name of the registered owner of the computer and the operating system’s serial number.

The report points out that although anti-virus programs should conceivably detect such spyware, not one of the major companies that make such software would admit to helping the FBI in getting their spyware through such filters. Pretty interesting. While it appears to be used only for good at the present time you do have to wonder what might happen if CIPAV were to fall into the wrong hands. It just goes to show that our emails and presence on the net aren’t nearly as anonymous as we’d like them to be.

Email gaffes can be merely embarrassing or downright career threatening. To avoid them, there are a few things you can do. First, never email when angry, intoxicated or otherwise not in a calm and rational mood. Second, double check your spellchecker! The auto-correct feature isn’t always well… correct. Third, resist the temptation to hit Reply All unless absolutely necessary, always use BCC rather than CC and check and double check the TO: line before hitting that send button.

We’d like to know your most embarrassing email gaffe. Leave a comment and share!

The aide, Damian McBride, was previously Brown’s political spokesperson. Here’s a look at what the emails contained:

McBride suggested the website spread false rumors that pictures exist of Osborne “posing in a bra, knickers and suspenders” and “with his face ‘blacked up’,” adding: “He wouldn’t be the first student to do some cross-dressing at university. But … why would a student in the late 1980s black up his face for the amusement of friends in their private college rooms? This in the era when young Tories wore ‘Hang Mandela’ T-shirts.”

McBride wrote: “Embarrassing photos have followed George Osborne around throughout his career: posing in his Bullingdon Club uniform at Oxford, lying on the carpet at home in his permed mullet, playing Monopoly with his fellow viscounts and standing in an … embrace with a prostitute at a party in London. But he knows that the most embarrassing photos from his past have yet to emerge.” (This is in a reference to pictures published in 2005 of shadow chancellor George Osborne with a prostitute, Natalie Rowe, taken 12 years earlier, and a notorious Bullingdon Club photograph of Osborne taken when he was at Oxford. The Bullingdon Club is well-known for its members’ wealth and rowdiness.)

McBride suggested spreading gossip, entirely unfounded, that Conservative Party leader David Cameron may have suffered from a sexually transmitted disease.

Yet another case of a high ranking political official not thinking before he hit send. When will they learn? A very good rule of thumb when it comes to sending emails is to never send anything you wouldn’t be comfortable seeing on the front page of the newspaper. Careless emails can damage company reputations, cost jobs and customers, and even get you in legal trouble. Think about that!

Here’s an excerpt:

Limit your time with email. Turn off auto-notifications that alert you to incoming email. He also suggests not checking your inbox more than three times per hour. It’s rare that any message is so important that it can’t wait 20 minute to be answered, and if it were so urgent, the sender would try to reach you in other ways, such as calling or texting.

Some of my contacts have begun using automated messages saying that they only check email once a day at specific hours and to not get upset if their email isn’t answered immediately.

The article goes on to note other ways to manage your email and points out that some companies have gone so far as to institute “Email Free Fridays”. They say this encourages employees to connect with their co-workers and customers in more conventional ways, and that those more personal connections have many rewards. How do you feel about email overload? Do you think email free Fridays are a good idea? Why or why not?

ClaraNet said that service was partially restored – users could send and recieve email but c0uld not access any emails stored in their inboxes. The ISP say no emails have been lost.

According to ClaraNet’s support site, incoming mail has not been lost, but is queued waiting to be delivered. The firm apologised for the inconvenience and targeted 6pm tomorrow for the restoration of full service.

The company has not publically explained the reason for the outage but some sources speculate that it was related to a failed RAID controller. Outages do happen, and it’s a good reminder to always have some sort of backup system in place just in case so that you can continue business as usual. Like electricity, you never realize just how much you depend on email until you’re suddenly cut off from it!

Another thing to remember in case of an outage is to communicate with your customers and vendors. Placing a notice on your website and/or on your company’s automated phone system is a good idea. A little communication goes a long way in building customer confidence and loyalty!

Although the article is aimed at non-profits, the information is useful to all kinds of companies and organizations. Here’s an excerpt:

Even if your organization follows best practices, you may occasionally do something that triggers a spike in spam complaints. This is most commonly caused by gaps in permission-based list building practices or unwelcome changes in message frequency or content. A good email service provider will offer you tools for mitigating the impact of mistakes like this on your overall email delivery.

For example, emails that have been organically acquired following strict permission-based practices are much less likely to generate spam complaints than addresses that have been added via append services. If your email service provider can segment your mail stream by the permission basis of intended recipients, any spikes in spam complaints from lower quality lists can be insulated from the mail resources used to send to your core house file.

This is an excellent article. These days, when sending out bulk emails from your company you need to be very very careful. Make sure you are following all the requirements of the CAN-SPAM act, and also review your emails to make sure the subject lines don’t contain words or phrases commonly associated with spam as they will be sure to trigger a spam filter, or worse, a blacklist somewhere along the line. Email can be a valuable tool for your company but you must exercise caution and care when using it.

Here’s the email they found on page 36:

“My name is (redacted), but my origin is from Republic of Congo. I have an inherited fund I want to invest in business in your country with a help of a local. …If you can assist, I am willing to give you 10% of the funds that is $3.5 million,” reads the apparent scam letter contained on page 36 of the 96-page filing. A copy of the filing was posted online by MSNBC.

That’s right, prosecutors included a Nigerian scam email along with the ones from Madoff’s victims. A scam within a scam. Makes you wonder just how carefully prosecutors actually looked at the emails as they were gathering them. Obviously it wasn’t near careful enough! The U.S. Attorney’s Office responsible for the case has so far not had any comment on the issue, and whether the blunder may harm the case has yet to be seen, but it wouldn’t be unreasonable for the judge to question the legitmacy of the other emails included with the scam one.

Here’s an excerpt from the student newspaper:

Three of the messages showed the Brown e-mail addresses – including first and last names – of approximately 500 first-years, sophomores and juniors who have submitted financial aid documentation, and the fourth contained nearly 300. In all, The Herald counted 1,773 names mistakenly divulged Monday.

The messages, which were sent around 2:40 p.m. Monday from Financial_Aid@brown.edu, reminded students which documents they need to submit and of the application’s deadline. They did not state that the messages’ recipients were students who had begun the process of applying for financial aid, but Director of Financial Aid James Tilton confirmed that fact Monday night.

Neoseeker is reporting that as many as 8000 Comcast email accounts have been compromised. The breach was discovered by a professor at Wilkes University. While doing a search on his email address he found a document hosted on Scribd that contained the usernames and passwords of thousands of Comcast customers. What’s more, the list had been there for at least 2 months and had been accessed thousands of times. Comcast is denying responsibility:

Jennifer Khoury, a Comcast spokeswoman, responded stating that they did not believe this information was provided by anyone inside the company citing lack of structure on account numbers and duplicity on some of the information. Instead, the information appeared to have been gathered through a phishing type scheme.

Comcast says they are freezing the accounts that were compromised and will notify their owners. If you have a Comcast account you’d be doing yourself a favor if you changed your password. Can’t be to careful! It’s not yet known who owns the document or how the data was obtained but experts believe it could be the result of a phishing scheme.

Here’s an excerpt:

Here is the text of the Democrats’ joint statement:

“We are no longer considering action on House Bill 1528 and Senate Bill 5446, also known as the Worker Privacy Act.

“Immediately upon becoming aware of an e-mail linking potential action on the bill to campaign contributions, bringing the bill forward was no longer an option.

“The e-mail raises serious legal and ethical questions. The matter has been referred to the Washington State Patrol for investigation.”

Part of the email implied that campaign contributions would stop unless the bill was signed into law. Lawmakers say the Legislature is not for sale and has asked the Washington State Patrol to investigate. This is yet another in a long line of cases where a poorly worded or just plain inappropriate email has played political havoc. So far several resignations have resulted as the result of racist emails about President Obama, and at least once lawmaker in Canada drew fire after distributing an email that supported anti-Israel sentiments and glorified the terrorist group Hezbollah. Once again, when in a professional setting think very carefully before hitting that send button!

Here’s an excerpt:

Threat Level broke the story last September that someone had obtained unauthorized access to Palin’s e-mail account by using publicly available information about her to reset her password to “popcorn.” He then posted the screenshots of e-mail in Palin’s account, as well as her new password, to a forum at 4chan.org under the username “Rubico”, enabling other intruders to access Palin’s account. Bloggers quickly traced the name Rubico to an e-mail address — Rubico10@yahoo.com — that Kernell was known to use, prosecutors say.

If convicted, he faces up to two years in prison and a fine of up to $40,000. Ironically, Kernell has sought to have prosecutors barred from referring to him as a hacker, even though that is exactly what he is. He claims he gained access to the account by simply guessing the answers to Palin’s security answers (which is a powerful reminder to make them as complex as possible rather than use things anyone could easily find out about you), but the mere fact he did so shows his intentions were to gain access to someone else’s account, and then when he changed Palin’s password and posted it on a public message board it’s obvious he was encouraging others to do the same. Hopefully he will learn a painful and expensive lesson!

Instead, hackers had gotten into his account and sent the bogus message, hoping someone would fall for it:

It’s unclear how miscreants broke into the account but the use of a brute force dictionary attack to uncover the password is one possibility. Trickery that allowed the password to be reset, as in the hack on a Yahoo! webmail account maintained by Sarah Palin, is another possibility. Fraudsters have hacked into Hotmail accounts to punt similar persons in peril scams in the past but rarely have they picked on such a conspicuous target.

Straw confirmed the attack but said that the webmail account attacked was only used for constituency business and unrelated to his work in government.

The attack is called an advance fee scam and it’s becoming more and more widespread. Straw is in good company though. Sarah Palin, Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus and Fox News have also had their email accounts hacked.

The email included a photo of the White House with its front lawn replaced by a watermelon patch and the caption “No Easter Egg Hunt this year.” One of the recipents, an African-American businesswoman, immediately scolded him:

“I think he’s saying that since there’s a black president, there will be no need to hunt for eggs since they’re growing watermelons in the front yard this year,” Price wrote.

She responded to the e-mail with: “Hey, that’s not nice at all. Not all black people like watermelon… you should know better than that.”

Grose replied: “The way things are today, you gotta laugh every now and then. I wanna see the coloring contests.”

Price said Grose’s response upset her more.

“As soon as I saw his response; that put me over the top because it was no big deal to him,” she said.

Grose claims he had no idea that the watermelon patch was a racist symbol, which is hard to believe. Despite turning in his resignation he still doesn’t seem to quite understand what all the fuss is about. Once again, the moral of this story is think, and think hard, before hitting that send button and make sure your employees do too. This kind of an email could cause your company a world of hurt ranging from bad PR to a costly lawsuit. Make sure your email and accceptable usage policies address situations like this!

The ATangledWeb blog is reporting that 30 British Telecom employees have been suspended for forwarding an email joke that made fun of Irish people. The company warned the suspended employees that they face further disciplinary action, prompting many to fear they may lose their jobs. In this economy that is no laughing matter. Here’s an excerpt:

The joke was sent around the office as a bit of fun. Everyone is worried about their jobs but we all try and cheer each other up.

The quip involves the death of three Irishmen. The first leaps with a budgie thinking he’s budgie-jumping; the second kills a parrot thinking he’s parrot-shooting and the third leaps off with a hen, believing he’s hen-gliding.

If you don’t quite get it, the joke is in the pronunciations of the various activities, which presumably pokes fun at the Irish brogue as well as intelligence. Budgie-jumping = bungee jumping, parrot-shooting =parachuting, and hen-gliding = hang gliding.

I’m part Irish and frankly I find the joke a bit stupid, but far from racist or offensive. However, assuming BT has a clearly defined email policy in place, the suspensions are well within the company’s rights. It may end up being a very costly lesson for the suspended employees, but an important one too. Think before hitting the send button and forwarding jokes, chain mails, or even seemingly innocent personal messages to your co-workers and/or employees. You never know how they will be received and it really isn’t worth the risk.

That said, if your company doesn’t have a clearly defined email policy in place, it’s a good idea to come up with one. It protects your company and your employees.

The case in question is a libel lawsuit filed against Staples by a former employee after the office supply giant sent a mass email announcing the employee was being fired for padding his expense report and for ethics issues. While the employee, a sales director, admitted to the charges, he still contends the email was libelous as it was sent out specifically to hurt his reputation. Here’s an excerpt:

Staples never previously disclosed the name of a fired employee in communications with employees; it sent no memos about other employees fired for expense policy violations; and most of the 1500 recipients did not travel for the company and did not need to be reminded of the travel expense policy.

With this decision, the First Amendment has been replaced by the maxim, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it.” Consider the irony: The Supreme Court has said that there is constitutional protection for false statements on matters of public concern, but now the First Circuit says there is no constitutional protection for true statements on matters of private concern. What’s worse, the court offers no guidance about how to distinguish what is of “public concern” from what is of “private concern”.

This case is a stark reminder to be very very careful what you say in an email because your words can and will reflect on your company and could land you in some boiling water!

The subject of the message was “Amazing” and in the body of it state committee member Carol Carter lamented, “I’m confused. How can 2,000,000 blacks get into Washington, DC in 1 day in sub zero temps when 200,000 couldn’t get out of New Orleans in 85 degree temps with four days notice?”

When the email was made public the state’s GOP Chairman Jim Geer said he was seriously considering her removal, but Carter apparently beat him to it by handing in her resignation.

“I forwarded a joke to eight people I thought were friends and it went off the cliff,” she said. “I’ve never wanted to do anything to hurt the party so I guess the best thing I can do is resign.”

When the e-mail became public on Thursday, state GOP Chairman Jim Greer said he was considering removing Carter from her committee woman’s post. In that position, she was one of three representatives from the county on the party’s statewide governing board.

“I’m disappointed and frustrated that leaders of our party, regardless of their intent or the circumstances, don’t understand the sensitivity to issues such as this,” Greer said. “The argument they’ll always make is that there’s nothing wrong with it, and there is something wrong with it.”

Carter is the third state GOP official to be involved in a racially themed email scandal in the last 4 months. In the previous incidents, one involved a racist joke, the other, an email that talked about killing then Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama.

Early last week a man by the name of Gabe Ford sent a mass emailing to a large segment of Clarkson University’s student body, and all hell broke loose. The email, which was sent to a carefully selected group of male students, invited them to be part of a new chapter of the Sigma Nu fraternity. Unfortunately, Mr. Ford seems to be unaware of the BCC: function and this is what happened as a result:

The email sent by Ford triggered an avalanche of responses, beginning with a message from one student who replied to the entire mailing list declining Ford’s offer. This began a cavalcade of emails which quickly took the form of an internet forum. Many responders expressed an interest to be dropped from the mailing list while others seized the opportunity to perpetuate a series of internet memes and hold conversations by replying to all of the original recipients. By 8:44 p.m. the following day, 75 related emails had been sent.

The school claims that since student email addresses are listed in the campus directory, there was no breach of privacy. I think this example shows again why it’s so important to use the BCC: field when sending mass emailings of any kind.

Of course this isn’t always a guarantee that things won’t get out of hand. When dealing with a mailing list you have to be prepared for everything. Always have easily accessible instructions on how to unsubscribe from mailings, and if you need to ask for personal info of any kind, make it clear it should be sent to you via your email address, not the list’s. Just today on a professional list that I am a member of the administrator asked everyone to send in their postal addresses (there was a good reason for his needing the info), but forgot that part. As a result I received the postal addresses of nearly 100 of my fellow list members! Oops!

The email contained links to graphic images of the carnage in Gaza as well as videos that glorify violence against Israel. Here’s an excerpt from the report:

The note earned her a rebuke on Wednesday from Prime Minister Stephen Harper, from the Jewish-rights organization B’nai Brith and a caution from her leader to be more careful.

In one video link there’s a graphic of a heart surrounding the image of the political leader of Hamas, while other videos show numerous flattering images of people draped in the group’s iconic green bandana.

Canada’s list of terrorist organizations includes three groups – Hamas, Islamic Jihad and al-Aqsa Martyr’s Brigade – that receive laudatory treatment in the linked messages.

Mourani explained that she had not examined the entire contents of the email, which included hundreds of pictures, along with a handful of videos, newspaper articles and blog entries.

After her email raised eyebrows on Parliament Hill, Mourani sent her colleagues a more personal note in which she offered no apologies.

There are two lessons to be learned here. Never forward messages without actually reading them throughly yourself (and if it says “forward this to everyone in your address book” don’t forward it at all) and perhaps most importantly, keep your personal beliefs and political views out of your workplace!
