The Importance of Email Archiving

Written by Dan Blacharski on August 18, 2008

We all know why email archiving is so important, but the folks at Archiving101.com summed it up perfectly:

Email Archiving; An important business insurance policy

It really is! Archiving saves you time and money if your company ever receives an e-Discovery request. You wouldn’t drive a car or own a house without insurance, so why run your business without a proper email archiving solution? No business owner likes to think litigation could happen to them, but thinking ahead is the smart thing to do.

Aside from the new regulations that make archiving emails a must, it also makes sense for more practical reasons such as keeping the size of user mailboxes manageable. Worried about how to store the thousands of emails your company sends and receives each month? Sit down and work out an archive strategy which could involve such space saving policies such as not archiving any non business related emails or only archiving the emails of employees in sensitive or critical positions. If you don’t have an archiving policy in place, the time to do so is now, before you get an eDiscovery or FRCP request!
